A few weeks ago, our team returned from our annual trip to Honduras, where we had the opportunity to witness the transformation Midwest Mission Kits and Projects bring to communities. It is a trip we look forward to each year because we get to see firsthand how these initiatives impact and transform lives.
As our team entered one of the schools, a phrase painted boldly across the wall immediately caught our attention:
“Education is the future of Honduras.”
This simple statement stayed with us as we traveled from school to school throughout the trip.
We visited several schools in a variety of communities, some near San Pedro Sula and others that required much more travel to reach. One of those was a community called Buena Vista. Getting there meant navigating multiple terrains and modes of transportation, including a bus ride, a boat, and finally a truck winding up into the mountains. It was remote and far removed from many of the resources we often take for granted. And yet, when we arrived, we were met with something powerful.
Students gathered with excitement, but they weren’t alone. Parents, older siblings, and relatives stood alongside them, showing up in full support of the next generation. The sense of community was immediate and tangible. Despite limited resources, there was no shortage of commitment. These families believe deeply in the value of education, and they are doing everything in their power to ensure their children have a future.
In many ways, we found ourselves learning from them. Their unity, determination, and shared hope painted a picture of what it looks like to truly invest in the next generation. It was a reminder that no matter where you are in the world, the desire is the same. We all want the best for our children.
But alongside that beauty, there was also a reality we couldn’t ignore.
At nearly every school we visited, one need stood out above all others: basic school supplies. The demand for Student Kits and educational resources is significant. One school shared that they had to delay the start of classes because the supplies had not yet arrived. Without notebooks, pencils, and essential materials, teachers and students simply could not begin.
It’s hard to imagine from our perspective. In the United States, school supplies are often easy to access and sometimes even discarded while still usable. But in Honduras, these items are foundational. They are not extras. They are essential tools that make education possible.
During our visit, Javier, a representative from Food For The Poor, shared something that deeply impacted us:
“Education is one of the greatest needs in the countries we serve. Out of 35 partner organizations, Midwest Mission is the only one providing school supplies. We are so grateful, and we want more. Education is the only way we can break the cycle of poverty.”
Within their entire network, Midwest Mission is currently the only organization collecting and distributing school supplies in this way. After witnessing the need firsthand, it became even more clear just how meaningful this work is and how much opportunity there is to grow it.
Which is why we are even more passionate about the intentional steps we are taking to respond.
At the end of each school year in the United States, countless usable supplies, including notebooks, gently used pencils, crayons, and more, are thrown away or set aside and forgotten. Items that could still serve a purpose are often treated as waste.
Midwest Mission’s Used & New School Supply Drive exists to change that.
By collecting gently used supplies from local schools and communities, we are able to redirect these resources to Honduras, where teachers can distribute them directly to students who need them most. What might seem insignificant here is essential there. These supplies help open doors to learning, growth, and opportunity.
We are inviting churches to be part of this effort by serving as local drop-off sites and creating a simple but meaningful connection between communities here and students in Honduras. It is an opportunity to practice stewardship, build relationships with local schools, and take part in hands-on mission work that has a lasting impact.
After visiting these communities, hearing their stories, and witnessing both their resilience and their need, this initiative feels more important than ever.
If you haven’t yet considered being part of the Used & New School Supply Drive, we invite you to take that next step. Together, we can help ensure that when students walk into their classrooms, they have exactly what they need to learn and become the future of Honduras.
Churches Needed as Drop-Off Sites for School Supply Drive
In light of this great need, Midwest Mission has timely opportunities for your congregation and church to get involved!
We are seeking churches to serve as Drop-Off Sites for our 2026 Used & New School Supply Drive. At the end of the school year, usable supplies are often discarded in the U.S., while students in Honduras lack basic tools for learning.
As a Drop-Off Site, your church would:
Register as an official collection location
Share ready-made promotional materials with nearby schools
Receive collected supplies at the end of the school year
Deliver donations to a Midwest Mission location, Permanent Collection Site, or Annual Conference Collection
Learn more, and register your church to help bridge this gap and turn leftover supplies into lasting impact at midwestmission.org/churchdropoff.
Weekend Workshop: Sewing Machine Repair
If you’re passionate about the impact sewing machines can make, we have an opportunity for you! Join Midwest Mission on April 18th for another Weekend Workshop. From 8:30-3:00 we will be hosting a Sewing Machine Repair Workshop; a hands-on workshop focused on verifying machines, testing operation, and learning how to properly clean and lubricate them.
Whether you’re brand new to the sewing realm or experienced in repairing machines, there’s a place for you. During this time, beginners can learn how to correctly thread and smoothly run a machine, while those with more experience can dive into tuning, cleaning, and troubleshooting to keep machines running like new. It’s also a great chance to connect with other enthusiasts while building practical skills that make a difference!
