Leading a Life of Serving

February 27th, 2026 Newsletter

“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” – 1 John 3:18

At Midwest Mission, we believe deeply in showing God’s love in practical ways — bringing words of love to life through acts of service.

Everything we do is rooted in a simple purpose: to share the love of Christ and the hope found in Him with people around the world and around the corner — many of whom we may never meet this side of heaven.

Our volunteers embody this calling beautifully. They give their time, talents, and treasures so that others may have what they need, living out Philippians 2:4: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

One volunteer who exemplifies this servant-hearted spirit is Joan Myers.

Joan, a long-time volunteer from Mt. Gilead, Ohio, has faithfully supported Midwest Mission for many years alongside her team from Trinity United Methodist Church. Even at 96 years old, Joan continues to further the mission every single week.

While she is no longer able to travel to serve onsite as she once did — including in 2003, when she and her husband helped construct 70 school desks — Joan has found meaningful ways to serve right where she is. She still leads her church’s sewing group, organizes the collection of quarters after Sunday services to support Midwest Mission, and played a key role in getting Trinity involved in assembling Rice & Soy Blessing Bags.

Joan reminds us that serving doesn’t stop with age or circumstance. A willing heart will always find a way.

“I would always look forward to seeing Joan and her husband Richard when they would come and volunteer with the Mt Gilead, OH team led by Robin Brucker,” said Pat Wright, Director Emeritus. “The last time the team was here was in 2019. I so miss Joan, whom I consider a once-in-a-lifetime "forever friend". And if I were to see her today, I would give her a great big hug! She sends the loose change she collects at church to Midwest Mission with such a nice note with it! Thank you, Joan!”

Because of Joan’s faithfulness, countless lives have been touched with hope and practical help. Thank you, Joan, for leading a life of service!

If you feel inspired by Joan’s example and would like to serve right where you are, we invite you to learn more at midwestmission.org/get-involved.

A Trailer Full of Hope (Even in -30° Wind Chill!)

Midwest Mission volunteers Rus and Tony DeBonis recently braved Minnesota’s bitter cold—complete with wind chills dipping to -30°—to deliver supplies, provide training, and strengthen partnerships across the region.

Their first stop was Alexandria, where they delivered a loom and provided hands-on mat weaving training. The group there was eager and highly motivated, excited to receive their loom and ready to begin weaving mats that will serve people in need. The enthusiasm in the room made the long drive and freezing temperatures well worth it!

From Alexandria, Rus and Tony traveled to the Permanent Collection Site in Park Rapids, where they picked up several donated items. They also stopped at a local organization that collects used medical equipment, adding even more valuable supplies to their growing load.

Before heading home, they left 40 Feminine Hygiene Kits to be picked up by New Horizons in Two Harbors. Those kits will ultimately be shipped to Ukraine, providing dignity and care to women facing incredibly difficult circumstances.

By the end of the trip, the trailer was completely packed—every inch filled with generosity. There truly wasn’t room for one more item!

We are deeply grateful to Rus and Tony for their willingness to serve, even during a brutal cold spell. They shared how beautiful the winter landscape was along the way—a reminder that even in the harshest conditions, there is beauty and purpose.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to the Park Rapids Permanent Collection Site for their continued dedication. Their faithful work spreading the word about Midwest Mission and gathering donations makes an incredible difference.

Because of volunteers and partners like these, hope keeps moving forward—one loom, one kit, and one full trailer at a time.
