Looking Back: A Shipment That Continues to Bring Hope

Every shipment has a story that continues long after it leaves our warehouse. As we look back on Midwest Mission's March shipment to Haiti, we're reminded that the generosity of volunteers and donors continues to change lives long after a container reaches its destination.

Through our partnership with Love A Child, medical equipment and supplies arrived at the Higgins Brothers Surgicenter for Hope in Fond Parisian, Haiti where they are already making a difference for patients and healthcare workers. 

Recently they shared with us that many of the hospital beds we sent have been set up in the surgicenter's newly opened maternity center, providing greater comfort for mothers, newborns, surgical patients, and others receiving care.

The shipment also included linens, scales, a sonogram machine, shower chairs, IV poles, overbed tables, laboratory materials, an exam table, and other much-needed medical supplies. Each item is helping equip the medical team to provide quality care for the people who depend on the facility.

As the only hospital providing 24-hour care for the surrounding region, the Higgins Brothers Surgicenter for Hope serves patients with a wide range of medical needs. The dedicated staff continue to provide compassionate care despite limited access to medical equipment and the growing demand for healthcare services.

As the shipment was unloaded at the hospital, Head Nurse VJ expressed gratitude for the adjustable hospital beds, explaining that they will better serve patients with respiratory conditions. VJ also shared how the additional sonogram machine will be a blessing, allowing staff to care for multiple patients at the same time when emergencies arise.

Head Surgeon, Thosiac, expressed his appreciation for the shipment, which will strengthen the hospital's ability to care for patients receiving surgical, emergency, and outpatient services.

When items reach their final destination, and we hear of the impact they are making, we are full of gratitude. Gratitude for the generosity of volunteers, donors, and partners who, months later, continue to provide comfort, strengthen healthcare, and share hope with communities around the world and around the corner.

Serving September: An Invitation to Serve Together

This September, people across the Midwest will come together for Serving September—a month dedicated to putting faith and love into action through practical acts of service.

Serving has a unique way of bringing people together. Friendships are formed, conversations begin, and communities grow stronger when people work side by side toward a common purpose. For many, serving is also the first step toward discovering a church community. While someone may not be ready to attend a Sunday service, they may gladly accept an invitation to make a difference alongside friends and neighbors. Through simple acts of service, they experience the love of Christ in action.

Chantel Corrie, our Executive Director, says that Jesus is often “caught,” not “taught,” and serving together is a great way to share Jesus.

There are many ways to participate in Serving September:

• Collect supplies for Midwest Mission Kits.

• Assemble Kits with your family, small group, church, workplace, or community organization.

• Create handmade items that provide comfort and care for people around the world.

• Host a Serving September event at your church or community, inviting others to serve together.

Sometimes the greatest impact of Serving September begins before a single Kit is packed. It starts with an invitation to serve — a simple  "Would you serve with me?".

This September, be that person. Invite a friend, gather your family, encourage your small group, or organize an event at your church. You may be surprised by the conversations that begin, the relationships that grow, and the lives God touches through simple acts of service.

And, the work done during Serving September doesn't end when the event is over. The Kits, handmade items, and donated supplies will continue serving children, families, and communities long after September has passed.

Volunteer Opportunity: Concrete Project Leader Needed

Do you have experience with concrete work and a heart for serving?

Midwest Mission is preparing to begin a large concrete project, and we're looking for a Volunteer Concrete Project Leader to help guide the work. We will have weekly volunteers who are ready and willing to serve. Now we simply need someone with concrete experience to lead the team and provide direction throughout the project.
