Three International Shipments in the Midst of State-Side Disaster Response

October 25th, 2024 Newsletter

About a month ago, volunteers would walk through the warehouses at Midwest Mission, jaws dropped at how much stuff we had in the building. You couldn’t see through the other side of the shelves. Cleaning Kits, Hygiene Kits, tarps, and more were stacked high, waiting to be needed. Perfectly packaged and wrapped boxes, labeled with the Kit name and date written on the side, were stocked in the thousands. And, this wasn’t because we were hoarding items that could be used – instead, we were prepared if a disaster of any magnitude hit the United States. The supplies would be ready to go within days of being needed.

But, that’s no longer the case. If you read last week’s newsletter, you’d know that our shelves, once full to the brim with disaster relief, are empty. And that reality is beginning to set in.

It is quite shocking, especially for volunteers who find themselves at Midwest Mission regularly. “It was quite alarming,” said one long-time volunteer who gives her time to Midwest Mission monthly. “In all my years, I have never seen these shelves so empty.”

But, because of your generosity, the shelves won’t be empty for long.

This week, we began rebuilding buckets of disaster relief, because we were able to purchase Disaster Relief Cleaning Kit supplies in bulk. This wouldn’t have happened without your monetary blessings, allowing us to turn your resources into humanitarian aid. Words cannot describe how grateful we are for your support and partnership, whether that’s through monetary donations, physical donations, prayer, or spreading the word about how others can help. YOU are refiling our shelves; and for many of you, you are doing that without ever needing to step foot into the building!

Thankfully, the truck for the next disaster relief request that we will fill isn’t arriving until next week, so we have plenty of time to assemble the needed Kits for that shipment.

It’s not just the hurricane relief that is emptying Midwest Mission’s shelves. This is set out to be the busiest month of the year, with over one million dollars worth of aid being sent in five international shipments, and more than 12 big state-side disbursements.

This week alone, we sent three international shipments full of requested aid. Two shipments went to Guatemala through our partner Food For The Poor, and one shipment went to Ukraine through North Star Foundation!

Both shipments to Guatemala were sent out on Thursday, October 24. Together, they had a combined value of over $380,000 worth of needed supplies.

Together, the containers included:

  • 45 Electric Sewing Machines

  • 10 Treadle Sewing Machines

  • 40 Coolers donated by Dometic

  • 1,960 Personal Dignity Kits

  • 3,600 Rice and Soy Blessing Bags

  • 320 Layette Kits

  • 460 Feminine Hygiene Kits

  • 60 Sleeping Mats

  • Medical Supplies

  • Fire Equipment

  • Tarps

This week, Inna, North Star Foundation’s Executive Director, reached out to Brad Walton, Midwest Mission’s Director of Operations, about getting a shipment to Ukraine. Brad quickly jumped on the opportunity, so we could provide them with many of the Rice and Soy Blessing Bags (previously called Rice Meals) that we had in the warehouse.

On Friday, October 25, a truck arrived at Midwest Mission, and the Operations Team loaded xxxxxx Rice and Soy Blessing Bags and xxxxx onto the truck. These supplies have a value of $xxxxxxx.  The items will be driven to Rhode Island, where North Star Foundation’s main office is located. The supplies will be added to several different shipments that they send to Ukraine from their Rhode Island location, blessing the people of Ukraine for several months to come.

We are blessed to be able to use what we have, and the opportunities we have, to bless others. Galatians 5:13 says, "For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." May we continue serving and giving as we can, as we act out our faith through practical modes of loving one another.
