Freedom on Wheels: Restoring Independence in La Mosquitia, Honduras

June 5th, 2026 Newsletter

Located in northeastern Honduras, La Mosquitia encompasses more than 865,000 acres of rainforest. It is a remote and largely undeveloped region, far off the beaten path. Roads are few and often difficult to navigate, stretching through vast expanses of jungle.

“Life in La Mosquitia is often measured by one’s ability to move,” Cepudo, our partner on-the-ground in Honduras, shared. “For many families in these remote communities, the lack of mobility was not just a physical barrier; it was an emotional burden that limited their independence and daily dignity.”

For those unable to move on their own due to injury, illness, disability, or age, daily life is completely dependent on others. Something as simple as getting food, using the restroom, seeking medical care, or visiting friends and family requires assistance. Without mobility equipment, leaving home, or even a single room, can be impossible.

Yet, that is the life so many in La Mosquitia live without access to wheelchairs.

That is, until a Midwest Mission shipment arrived.

Recognizing the tremendous need, the CEPUDO team worked tirelessly to ensure wheelchairs reached this remote region, overcoming significant geographic challenges to deliver these life-changing resources.

“This was not just a delivery,” they shared. “These were moments willed with relief and tears of joy. Families who for years had depended on others for every movement — or who had spent decades confined to a single room — finally experienced the true meaning of autonomy. Thank you, Midwest Mission, for this priceless gift.”

The recipients did not simply receive medical equipment. They received the opportunity to reintegrate into their environment and face their challenges with a level of security that once seemed unreachable.

In communities like La Mosquitia, support is rare, yet the need is so great. When help does arrive, the simple act of being remembered can be the greatest gift they could receive. It is hope. It is empowerment. And it is the love of Christ shared through the gift of a wheelchair.

By donating your used wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and crutches, more people can have independence and autonomy, just like those in the community of La Mosquitia. And, more people will feel the love of Christ through putting your faith in action.

You can drop off medical supplies at a Midwest Mission location or at a Collection Site near you.

Turn Unused Space into a Place of Hope — Become a Collection Site!

Could your church or organization become a Collection Site for Midwest Mission?

With locations in Pawnee, Illinois, and Jefferson, Iowa, Midwest Mission receives donations from supporters across the Midwest.

But, Collection Sites help make it easier for donors to give requested supplies without traveling long distances.

Becoming a Collection Site is simple. All you need is available space and a willingness to help coordinate the delivery of donated items to Midwest Mission.

The impact is significant. The more Collection Sites we have, the more donations we can receive. The more donations we receive, the more resources we can send to those in need. And the more resources we send, more hope and empowerment reaches communities around the world and around the corner through tangible acts of love.

While additional Collection Sites are welcome in any state, there is an especially urgent need for sites in Indiana and Ohio.
